Current Event Assignment (Week Two - Brittany Leddy)

My Current Event is about the decrease of the amount of traditional families and the dispute on whether it is or is not a crisis. In this clip, William Doherty (a sociology professor) touches a bit on the subject. There were some others but they were a bit more opinionated and biased.

You only need to watch from 2:00-4:00.

    The issue of "traditional families" or couples who have children outside of marriage was an issue in the recent election with the announcement that Bristol Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate's daughter, was pregnant.

    It seems like the the "non-traditional family" is becoming a trend in Hollywood as well. So many celebrity couples are having children before marriage: Nicole Richie & Joel Madden, Angeline Jolie and Brad Pitt, Ashlee Simpson & Pete Wentz, just to name a few. This may be influencing the demise of traditional families.

    Also, as the YouTube clip pointed out, some celeb couples have children out of marriage and then split up. That would be like in the case of Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams. Here is the link to the article:

    William Doherty touches briefly on financial instability in non married parental house holds. I consider this to be one of the greatest challenges faced by non married parental house holds. Being able to provide basic necessities can be difficult without a stable two parent income. There are however a few options that non married parents can consider when trying to maintain a healthy and secure lifestyle. This web article touches on some possbile solutions to this daunting task.
