I chose this clip because it is a good summary of what is happening right now in terms of what Obama is doing his first week in office. Making good on his campaign pledge, President Obama is proposing that states be allowed to set their own emissions standards. Global warming is a serious threat, but this clip does a great job of presenting both sides. It also incorporates opinions from people in two different area of the United States that could be affected by Obama's proposal.

ReplyDeleteIn other Obama news... The House voted, 244-188, for Obama’s $819 billion plan to stimulate the economy. Obama's argument is that this plan will "put American's back to work."

ReplyDeleteThis article ties into what Gregory mentioned about the disadvantages that low-income families are facing, however it focuses more on how families are adjusting their lifestyles to keep their families afloat during these hard economic times. One couple talked about in the article, the Berry’s, is not facing marriage troubles, but is struggling through the changes the economy has made to their daily lives.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I would agree that this is ultimately a noble cause, I believe there are a variety of factors that need to be considered before a move like this is made. To go along with some of the concerns Sarah has mentioned, I have included an article that is critical of how this will ultimately affect the economy. I found one of the statements in this article to be of particular interest . . . .
ReplyDelete"But cap-and-trade would amount to a tax, raising energy costs. And several independent studies have suggested that emissions limits could be a drag on economic growth, a concern raised frequently by opponents of climate change legislation."

ReplyDeleteThis article helps support Grace's Current Event presentation. It also touches upon Anne's point of the over 800 billion dollar economic plan to stimulate the economy. Although the stricter emissions test could make it tougher on the car companies in America, I do believe that this is a necessary step in order to help save our environment.
I just wanted to make a quick comment regarding the cost required to switch to alternative energy cars. While alot of focus is being made to the cost for the companies producing the vehicles, other people will have to pay as well. At home I work at a towing and mechanic shop. If a switch is made to alternative energy cars, all of our computer software, equipment and employees knowledge would be obsolete. With that being said, I think that the goernment should consider all of the people who would be directly and indirectly affected if a change is made to quickly.
