Three days after starting his presidency, President Obama signed to overturn the ban on funding overseas organizations that deal with abortion and provide counseling on the abortion topic. Many citizens are excited for the raising of the ban because they feel it will initiate help to women in foreign countries and attempt to prevent unwanted pregnancy, however others such as anti-abortion and pro-life groups do not agree with lifting the ban and are prepared for the uphill battle their campaigns will face due to the new policy. The clip below gives information about the history of the ban, how former presidents have dealt with the issue, and President Obama's personal feelings on lifting the ban along with his plans to bring peace to the minds of all Americans.

What strikes me as most interesting about this clip is not that President Obama removed the ban, but that it is that easy to remove a ban. This ban has been in place since the Regan days, only to be taken away by Clinton, then reinforced by Bush, then now taken away by Obama. I just cannot believe that a presidential ban is that easy to take away or enforce. I have included a link talking more about the ban.

"Where should the government spend money?" If you type this into google, you get 23.6 million hits. Everyone saying something different, but a majority of them siting things that need to be done at home.
ReplyDeleteI do not understand why in the economic crisis that we are in, that we propose spending so much money on things we really cannot afford to do at the moment.
In fact, this Forbes article gives a good look into what we should do- invest in stuff, stop spending irrationally, and start spending where we need it. Bruce Bartlett writes, "But it must be the right kind of spending. It must draw real resources out of the economy--that is the only kind of spending that will work. Buying bad mortgages and sending out more rebate checks won't do any good."
Here is the link if anyone is interested. I think he makes a lot of really good points.

I find it shocking that in the economic crisis that we are in these days that one of the first major orders Obama addressed did not have anything to do with our own country. I am curious to know exactly how much money this going to cost the tax payers; money that could be being used to aid our dwindling economy.
ReplyDeleteI am honestly very surprised to hear about the United States funding of contraception world wide. I think that it is morally nobel of the US to contribute to those in need of this type of assistance. I am however questioning the allocations of national spending in such economic hard times. I think that our money could be better spent in the US before spending money on foriegn abortion. This responsibility lies in the hands of each individual nation, not just the US. I think there are more pressing issues in the world at this time.
