Current Event (Silvia Gaucin)

On Friday April 10, Andrew Cazares and Fausto Manzera were pulled over on the Dan Ryan because of a flat tire. An alleged drunk driver was speeding and slammed into Andrew’s car causing his gas tank to explode leaving his car completely dismantled and tragically killing these two friends. The man then leaves the scene, but was shortly caught and taken into custody. It turns out that his blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit. Now the controversy comes when we find out the drunk driver was Joseph Frugoli, an 18 year veteran of the Chicago Police Department who was off-duty. The policeman was charged with reckless homicide, aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an auto accident, yet still let out on bond. He has been reported to be in at least three other accidents one of which was similar to this one, yet all charges were either dropped or thrown out. Here is a link to a news video clip describing the accident. Do you think justice was served? Do you think police officers get away with much more because of their occupation? Do you think that they are being too harsh on Frugoli?

  1. I think justice was definitely not served. This officer took the lives of 2 innocent, young people and is getting out on bail. On top of it, he has been in a serious number of other events that has led up to this tragedy. I understand that officers get away with small things like tickets and such but not killing people while driving drunk! He should have to face the same penalties as everyone else who would have to in this situation. As a police officer, he is suppossed to be setting an example for the community he protects; instead, he became a hazard that people need to be protected from.

Here is the link to the other Chicago police officer who got off easy after beating up a bartender:

  2. I am not sure if justice was served yet in this case. I do not agree that the cop should have been let go on bail because of the seriousness of his crime. I do not think a normal citizen would have been let go on bail so why should this officer get to walk around free until trial. I believe that we will find out if justice is served after the trial is over and this criminal ends up serving a large amount of prison time. This is an incredibly sad tragedy and it is not something that should be taken lightly. The penalty Frugoli receives should be the same anyone else would receive.

  3. I would have to agree that justice was not served. This is a terrible tragedy. Drinking and driving is something that is so incredibly avoidable. I am so sorry to hear about your friends and would like to express my deepest condolences for you and for everyone who knew your friends. I am not sure how to stop these kinds of unfortunate crimes because it is internal corruption in the police department which would be incredibly hard to tackle. I would hope that people working to protect civilians would have a conscious that would make them want to promote justice no matter how difficult the circumstances.

I have included a video that discloses the police's brutality toward a handicap man. This video proved the police were acting out of line after they attempted to frame the victim.

  4. I think that justice is not served yet. The publicity that was given to this will not go unnoticed. Obviously the policeman has a bad track record and the court will not treat this lightly. Hopefully, he gets the maximum sentence considering what happened to those victims.

  5. I think it is an all around horrific situation. It was irresponsible for that police officer to be drinking and driving. He holds a public service office, and although sometimes these offices get special treatment, in this case, he shouldn't.

I am sure he feels incredibly guilty for what he did, and what happened as a consequence of it. He should be tried as any other citizen with nothing special attached to it, and take responsibility for his actions.

  6. The fact that he is a cop should have nothing to do how he is sentenced. If anything, he should be held to a higher standard than everyone else. This wasn't just an accident. He had to have known that he was too drunk to drive because he was 3 times over the limit, and yet he chose to get in the car anyway. He should be punished.

  7. I know I posted to this blog this day of class, however, I do not see it now. So I'm sorry if this shows up twice.

I do not think cops should any special privileges when it comes to the law. The law is the law. And just because the ENFORCE the law, they don't think that they always have to abide by it as well. Well that is not right. Cops have just as much of responsibility to the law as any other individual does. This situation is absolutely horrible, and I can not believe it turned out the way it did. In this situation, it's the pot calling the kettle black. Cops can't arrest people for drinking and driving and then go ahead and do it themselves. They need to practice what they preach, otherwise no one will take them seriously. And respect will be lost. Also, I know this cop doesn't represent ALL cops, but other cops can not be happy about this situation. It kind of taints their reputation, especially for that particular police department.
