On January 26, 2009, Nadya Suleman gave birth to octuplets, through In-Vitro fertilazation. Suleman was already a mother to six children at home three of which are disabled. In this video, which was on the Today Show,Suleman is interviewed by Ann Curry of MSNBC's Dateline, regarding the octuplets. This video touches on all the issues of controversy; single mother parernting, unemployment, and In-Vitro fertalization. Do you think this mother is being selfish? What are your views on the doctor that allowed such a procedure?
This is only a short clip from youtube that highlights the interview, for the full video go to: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29129311 and click on the link to the hour long segment.

ReplyDeleteAlthough in the video Nadya explains that she was an only child and did not want to feel lonely, I think having this many children was a selfish act. It would be much different if she had her own home and means of support besides the help of her parents. Also, although it would be difficult for her to get a job, she does not have one and has no source of income to provide for her children on her own. I think this isn't so much a situation of Nadya being a single mother as it is a situation of her not being able to support the lives she brought into the world. John and Kate are a couple that had twins, and then six more children unexpectedly, however they both are working and have a way to support their children. Below is an interview with John and Kate, and I feel that although their situation is often hectic and overwhelming like Nadya's, it is viewed differently because they have a stable environment to raise their children in.

I agree I think this is very selfish. She should of thought this through more. Plus, she plans on going back to college in the fall, what is she thinking? How is she going to take care of her children then? Very irresponsible! Based on a recent article (below) the tax payers will have to pay a few million dollars to support the children. With the economic situation, this is not a time to be seeking attention by having babies.

I think one of the biggest factors that bother me is the fact that she is unemployed AND does not have a house of her own; she lives with her grandmother in a three bedroom house that is run down. Her reasoning behind it was mostly situated with the fact that she was seeking some form of loving family because her past and childhood was so dysfunctional. You would think she would have more sense than to bring all these children into the world without a backup plan on how she was going to raise them. Honestly think she is creating an even more dysfunctional family by doing this. I acknowledge her side of the story and somewhat see her point of view and her wanting to care for these children, but it is difficult to do everything by herself especially for that amount of children and the age that they are in. I also don’t know why she was so surprised at the amount of children she conceived if “Recently, studies have shown that assisted reproductive technologies have contributed to an increase in multiple births, which have a higher rate of prematurity than single births”, which was stated in an article on infertility treatment. (Link provided below) Either she failed to look up this information or the doctor just didn’t mention it and obviously allowed this to happen.

I want to believe that she is genuine, but honestly I believe that she knows what she is doing and the amount of money she will receive to help raise these children played a big factor in her decision just as Johanna stated.
I think that this woman is extremely irresponsible. I think it is perfectly alright to want to have a large family, but only if you can provide for them. The fact that she is unemployed, still in school, and does not even own a home should have been enough reasons to stop her from having another child, let alone eight, at this moment in her life. I feel sorry for these children because they are going to have a rough life because of an irresponsible mother.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link about how the three bedroom home she is currently living in is going to be foreclosed on due to lack of payments.

In the video posted, there seems to be no argument present because Nadya Suleman is unwilling to admit that her actions were wrong. It is my opinion that she was acting selfishly and not in the best interest of her children. The simple fact is she is unemployed and responsible for the lives of 14 children. In the video, Ann Curry talks about who she expects financial support from her friends, family, and church. These people didn’t ask her to have 14 kids, why should they be held responsible for Nadya’s selfishness?
ReplyDeleteThere is a website that kind of takes both sides of this issue. It is a religious website that praises the miracle of birth and says these babies’ lives are more important than dollar signs. I feel this statement to be illogical because it takes money to have children. However, the article goes on to talk about why not conceiving naturally is wrong and should not be done.

I think she is being extremely selfish. If she already had six children at the time, THREE of which were disabled, why would she want to have anymore children? Especially if she is unemployed! Then for her to end up with EIGHT more children? Something does not seem right. What are the odds of that? It's too bad her kids are going to have to suffer because of her irresponsible decisions. There is no way she is going to be able to give them the time and necessities they need. Unless, she suddenly becomes rich, which I think was her plan all along. As soon as she had the octuplets she instantly talked about being apart of a reality television show. So out of this whole situation, she may gain fame and money. Though that is still selfish, atleast this unemployed mom would be able to support her FOURTEEN children.
