The Controversy over Michael Phelps Bong Picture
This is a video about Michael Phelps and a picture of him smoking marijuana from a bong. He acknowledged regrettable behavior after a photo in a British newspaper showed this picture and also gives a background of the situation he is involved in after this photo being taken. What do you think about his behaviors and loosing deals with Kellogg's becuase of this photo?

I think it's great. Maybe he can sign a contract for high times. But really...I really don't think it's a big deal that he's been caught smoking pot. It's Kellogg's business decision to drop him, so that's their business. Barack Obama smoked pot, and wittily stabbed at Bill Clinton I believe, when he said "I inhaled frequently. That was the point." Obama has received very little slack for things he's done in his youth, so why should Phelps be treated any differently?
ReplyDeleteApparently, Phelps is going to be prosecuted by the local police of where ever this took place. This seems somewhat unfair, as if anyone other than Michael Phelps where photographed nobody would care. I think the police are wasting time interviewing party goers and trying to put a case together. Surely there are better things they could be doing with taxpayer time and money than investigating a 23 year old who smoked, and did not deal, pot.
ReplyDeleteI think that this media craze is ridiculous. I would put money on that Michael Phelps is not the only person that there are photographs of smoking marijuana from that party, but no one hears about them. I do not think that because someone is a celebrity or world class athlete in this case, that they should be subjected to this sort of public humiliation. He is human, and humans all make mistakes. Phelps apologized already, I think everyone should just move on.

ReplyDeleteI concede to the people who say he did not ask to be thrown into the public
eye/sphere by becoming a gold medalist in the Olympics; however, he did ask
to be thrown in there when he signed contracts to represent all kinds of public
companies. Once he decided to capitalize on his success he made himself
susceptible to this sort of criticism. If he wants to be a spokes person for
corporations he is going to have to be held to a higher standard than those
who do not sign contracts worth millions of dollars. Whether you think pot
smoking should be illegal or not, it is still an irresponsible move on his part.
Also, I do not agree with the people who say he is still young and entitled to
make mistakes. He is 23 (not that young) and has already gotten in trouble
with drinking and driving, he should know better.
